These are the voting results for the Milford NH election held on March 8, 2022 at the Milford High School. There were 9,953 voters on the checklist at the beginning of the day. There were 60 new voters that registered during the day, leaving a voter checklist total of 10,013 at the end of the day.  There were 2,401 ballots cast, for a turnout of 24.0%.

There was a complication that delayed the completion of the recount. There were originally 2401 ballots cast at the polls with five sheets per ballot for a total of 12005 sheets that were cast. The problem was that only 2398 sheet #1 sheets were found during the recount for a shortage of three sheets of page one of the ballot. The suspicion is that the three missing sheets are mixed in with the remaining 9,604 sheets that were not recounted, but that is only a guess. The suspicion is that one of the missing sheets is a vote for Tim Finan since there was one ballot that was marked in a way that would have not been initially recorded as a vote by the tabulator so he should have gained a vote for that one and his vote total did not change. Also, the suspicion is that one of the missing sheets is a vote for David Catanzano since he lost one on the recount, and the third missing sheet might be a blank vote. It was decided to not look again for the missing three sheets since no matter what they are, they won't change the results of the race.

Milford NH Annual Town Voting History

 

This is a comparison of voter turnout for the March elections in Milford. The actual yearly totals for the years 2002 to 2021 are shown below.

* We had 2194 voters at the March election in 2021. This is slightly below the 2355 that we averaged in the past five years, and slightly above the 2107 that we averaged in the past ten years, so all in all, it was a fairly typical turnout. Last year's turnout of 3153 was an extreme outlier in that it was the highest turnout since 2002, so comparing this year to only the results for last year is not a good comparison.

* The voter checklist is purged every ten years, and this year is scheduled to be a purge year. The supervisors of the checklist normally maintenance the checklist each year following specific procedures. They can't arbitrarily remove names from the checklist; they have to have a specific reason to do so. There are legal situations where a name on the checklist is for someone that is no longer eligible to be on the checklist (i.e. phantom names), and the decennial purge eliminates these phantom names. An example of phantom names would be for people that lived in Milford but died somewhere else and their death did not get legally fed back to the Supervisors of the checklist. Another example would be for someone that lived in Milford, then moved somewhere else and their move out of town did not get legally fed back to the supervisors of the checklist. The purge process tries to identify the names that really do not belong on the checklist and then removes them.

The checklist purge occurs in years that end in a "1", so an example of a purge reduction is the change in the checklist counts from 2011 to 2012. There were 10,925 names in 2011, and this was reduced to 8,679 in 2012, which is a reduction of 2,246 names or 21.6%. If we have the same percentage reduction in the coming year's purge, then the checklist will drop 2,706 to 10,073 at the end of next year's voting session.

In 2021, the voter turnout percentage was 17.2%, below both the 20.8% that we averaged in the past five years, and the 19.9% that we averaged in the past 10 years. As the number of phantom names on the checklist steadily climbs during the ten years between purges, then the voter turnout percentage slowly drops as the turnout is being compared to higher and higher numbers. As this is the last year in the cycle, then the effects of this process are most extreme for this year. So, if you assume that there are 2,500 phantom voters on the checklist at this time, then the real voter turnout percentage this year would be (2194 / 10,279) or 21.3%. This is still a very low number as compared to presidential elections, but it is better than the 17.2% that is what is reported.

* There were 72 attendees at this year's deliberative session, which is less than both the five-year average of 97 and the ten-year average of 88. It is likely that concerns about covid-19 caused perhaps 20 to 25 people to not attend this year. That is unfortunate, but it is my opinion that holding the deliberative session at the regular time was a better choice than the two alternatives that were available, which were to have a zoom meeting where the voters did not have the opportunity to actually vote, or to delay the session to perhaps May which would have delayed the implementation of the votes.

Milford New Hampshire Presidential Voting Results November 3, 2020

These are the results of the elections for Milford NH for the Presidential elections held November 3, 2020. There were 12,309 people on the checklist at the beginning of the day, 791 newly registered voters were added during the day, resulting in 13,100 registered voters on the checklist at the end of the day. There were 9259 ballots cast, for a voter turnout of 70.6%.

The election was held at Milford High School instead of at Milford Middle School as is usual due to the extra space needs resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.  The election ran very smoothly despite the extra precautions that were taken during the day.  There was a big line of perhaps 400 people at 6 am when the polls opened, and it took more than an hour for the line to be processed.  After that time, the wait was typically no longer than about 15 minutes for voters.

There were about 3,000 absentee voters during the election instead of a more typical 700 absentee voters for a Presidential election.  New processes were set up to handle the increase absentee voter returns, and it went very smoothly.

The new ePollBooks were continued to be used for checking in voters, and this seemed to speed up the process considerably.  Our use of them is still considered to be a formal test as they have not yet been approved by the Secretary of State.  RSA changes are required to get the state laws to match the process that is used to process them. The processes that do not comply with state law have been approved by the Secretary of State.  The most consequential variance is that state law requires that there be high speed printers on hand to be able to quickly reprint the updated checklist from a spreadsheet that is being constantly updated.  That does not really work, so instead the process is to manually update the checklist on an ongoing basis using the printed receipts from the ePollBook system.

Milford NH Voting Results September 8, 2020 State Primary

 

These are the results of the 9/8/2020 Milford NH state primary election. The election was held at the high school instead of at the middle school due to space considerations that were needed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The election ran smoothly despite all the changes that had been implemented to maintain social distancing. 

 

There were 11,990 people on the checklist at the beginning of the day and there were 97 new voters added to the checklist during the day, leaving 12,087 people on the checklist at the end of the day. There were 3274 voters in the election, resulting in a turnout rate of about 27.1%, which is very high for a primary election. Due to the pandemic, there were about 900 absentee voters, as compared to about 100 that would normally be more typical. I think that the solid turnout was largely due to the extra absentee voters that might not have normally voted.

Milford NH Voting Results March 10, 2020

These are the voting results for the Milford NH voting held on March 10, 2020 at the Milford Middle School. There were 11,888 voters on the checklist at the beginning of the day. There were 58 new voters that registered during the day, leaving a voter checklist total of 11,946 at the end of the day. There were 3039 ballots cast, for a turnout of 25.4%. This is a very high turnout since this was the most voters at a March election since 2002 when there were 3153 voters. The hot button in 2002 was a proposed kindergarten building and program.
